Long description:
Impromptu is a short piece for solo ‘cello, and was written after hearing Francois Le Roux playing ‘cello improvisations with Paul Hanmer (piano) at the Grahamstown Festival in 2007. This inspired me to write this piece for Francois which, although fully noted, has an improvisory feel, hence the title ‘Impromptu’.
The work is based on several short motives and interludes, ranging from the majestic opening to a lamenting theme just over half way through.
